An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The incident occurred while agents were attempting to arrest the man, who was reportedly a target of a "targeted enforcement operation" by ICE. The mayor described the situation as serious and stated that the child, a five-year-old, was believed to be unharmed.
Mamdani expressed his concerns on social media, stating that he had contacted President Donald Trump to demand an end to ICE enforcement actions in the city. He emphasized his stance against what he termed as the terrorization of communities by ICE agents.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the operation was taking place in the Bronx around 4 PM and that an officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the man's injury. The incident is currently under investigation. The New York Police Department reported that the man remains conscious and is receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
This shooting follows previous incidents involving ICE agents, including the deaths of two US citizens in January. The agency has faced increasing scrutiny and criticism regarding its enforcement actions. ICE has been tasked with a deportation target of one million individuals per year and has seen its budget significantly increased under recent legislation.
