A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has issued an arrest warrant for Eduardo Bolsonaro, brother of presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, ahead of the upcoming runoff election. Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the warrant on Thursday, just weeks before the election between incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro, who is considered the favorite to win.
In June, the Brazilian Supreme Court convicted Eduardo Bolsonaro on charges related to lobbying the US to interfere in the trial of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. Eduardo has been a significant link between his brother and the Trump administration, having accompanied Flavio Bolsonaro to a meeting with then-President Donald Trump in May.
The political climate in Brazil is highly polarized, with both sides accusing each other of corruption and lawfare as the election approaches. In March 2025, Eduardo Bolsonaro announced plans to move to the US to focus on efforts to free his father, which resulted in the loss of his seat in the Brazilian National Congress and his position as a federal police investigator.
Currently residing in Texas as a green card holder, Eduardo Bolsonaro was convicted of lobbying for sanctions against members of the Brazilian government during his father's trial. Justice de Moraes, whom the Bolsonaro family views as a political adversary, chaired the investigation that led to Jair Bolsonaro's sentencing to 27 years in prison for attempting to stage a coup in September 2025.
In his ruling, de Moraes stated that Eduardo Bolsonaro should begin serving his four-year sentence immediately, emphasizing that he cannot evade justice by leaving the country. The justice also revoked Eduardo Bolsonaro's Brazilian passport and directed the federal police to arrest him if he returns to Brazil.
