Eric Lewis, 35, has been arraigned on 76 charges related to the ambush killing of a Philadelphia police officer and has been ordered held without bail, according to court records. The charges include murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer, attempted murder, 10 counts of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and other related offenses. His next court date is scheduled for October 26.

The charges are connected to a shooting that occurred on Saturday, which resulted in the death of Officer Shane Seiber and left his partner injured. Seiber, 40, was a father of two and an Air Force veteran who served 10 years with the Philadelphia Police Department. He is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old son, and a 3-year-old daughter.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated at a news conference on Saturday, "He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today. His wife was able to be by his side before he passed, as well as his family." The wounded officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times and was initially listed in critical condition but has since been reported in stable condition.

The incident began around 12:20 a.m. Saturday when the two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun and located an armed individual on a porch. According to police, the officers came under significant gunfire after reaching the porch.

Additional officers and a SWAT team arrived shortly after and found both officers on the porch suffering from gunshot wounds. More gunfire ensued, leading authorities to declare a barricade situation before Lewis was taken into custody.

Police reported that Lewis was found in possession of two handguns and a shotgun, one of which belonged to an officer who was wounded in the attack. District Attorney Larry Krasner, during a news conference, did not disclose whether Lewis had fired the officer's handgun or how he obtained the other firearms. He noted that there was nothing in Lewis' criminal background that would have prevented him from acquiring a firearm.

Lewis, who is employed by the Philadelphia Water Department, has a criminal history dating back to 2012, according to Pennsylvania court records. He was convicted of theft and receiving stolen property in 2012, as well as gun-related offenses and simple assault in 2013, for which he received probation. In 2018, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct involving fighting and was again sentenced to probation. Records also indicate that Lewis received three traffic citations in 2024 for driving without headlights, failing to provide proof of insurance, and a windshield-related violation.
