President Donald Trump stated on Monday that an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine is in effect because he asserted it. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump claimed both nations agreed to the ceasefire and cautioned against breaking it. However, Russia has not confirmed any agreement to cease attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated he was unaware of the ceasefire prior to Trump's announcement, stating he “immediately supported” it. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not commented on the matter.

Following Trump's announcement, Zelensky accused Russia of violating the alleged ceasefire by attacking a power plant in Kyiv and other energy facilities in the Kharkiv region.

When asked about the ceasefire, Trump reiterated his claim that both sides had agreed, stating, “Well, they agreed. You know why? Because I said, ‘You agree.’ That’s why. They agreed because I said they agree, and that thing has to get settled. That war is a disaster.”

Trump referenced a death toll related to the conflict, stating, “Did you see the numbers that just came out this month? Thirty-two thousand, mostly soldiers, were killed. Young people, 32,000 killed. That war has to be over with.”

Trump has attributed rising oil prices to the Russia-Ukraine war, citing attacks on oil refineries by both nations, rather than the conflict involving Iran, where U.S. and Iranian military blockades have disrupted the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump had previously announced a similar ceasefire last month, which did not materialize. Zelensky noted that Russia has not yet approved the current agreement, and a Kremlin spokesperson mentioned that “contacts are ongoing.”
