Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani stated that Qatar has demonstrated its strength and cohesion in the face of regional instability during a meeting with the Shura Council. He noted that the region has faced "exceptional events" amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Sheikh Tamim emphasized that Qatar's response has shown resilience, stating, "Our country and the region have faced exceptional events that have once again proven the cohesion of state institutions."
The conflict, which began on February 28, has led to a global energy crisis, with Qatar being directly attacked by Iran, including an incident in March when Tehran struck Qatar's Ras Laffan gas facility, the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) production site. The emir mentioned that Qatar's ability to manage the consequences of regional instability is due to policies implemented prior to the war. He asserted that the security of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states is non-negotiable, stating, "The security of Gulf Cooperation Council states and the preservation of their sovereignty are matters that cannot be compromised on."
Sheikh Tamim also highlighted the disruption of global supply routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked by Tehran since the start of the conflict. He called for increased efforts to secure maritime routes and protect energy facilities and civilian infrastructure. Al Jazeera's Zein Basravi reported that Sheikh Tamim reiterated Qatar's preference for resolving conflicts through peaceful dialogue while reaffirming the country's commitment to the Palestinian cause.
Basravi noted that the emir pointed out how attacks on LNG facilities have negatively impacted Qatar's economy. He cautioned against returning to previous conditions after the crisis, signaling a potential shift towards non-carbon-related industries. Sheikh Tamim mentioned that Qatar has invested over $60 billion in various sectors, including infrastructure projects and public-private partnerships. Rashid Al-Mohanadi, vice president of the Center for International Policy Research, remarked that Qatar has a history of transforming crises into opportunities, expressing hope that the country will emerge stronger and more resilient after the current challenges.
