Ryan Elijah, a former television journalist, is running to represent Central Florida in Congress after winning the Republican primary on August 18 with 47% of the vote against incumbent Cory Mills, who received 34%. Elijah's victory comes amid Mills' personal and professional scandals that raised concerns about losing the Republican-leaning district to Democrats.
Initially endorsed by former President Donald Trump, Mills later claimed he encouraged Mills to withdraw from the race. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Elijah expressed his commitment to being an independent voice in Congress and addressing issues such as Iran, affordability, and immigration.
Elijah stated, "I love my job. It's something I could have retired from TV and been perfectly happy. But I think we all look for the time you're asked to step up and lead. And for me, that was this time. When we saw how the primary was playing out, it just became clear that we were going to lose this election in November." He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in government, stating, "If you have nothing to hide, that's the best way to be transparent. No one is above the law."
Regarding military engagement with Iran, Elijah acknowledged the need to prevent a nuclear threat while expressing concerns about a prolonged conflict. He said, "They're concerned this is going to be a never-ending war. They don't want that. I don't want that either. I share that belief, which is why I think we need to draw this conflict down."
On immigration, Elijah noted improvements under GOP leadership but stressed that enforcement should focus on criminals. He remarked, "We need to start with the criminals. We have got many criminals still here illegally in the United States."
Elijah reiterated his position as an independent voice, stating, "If it's a policy that supports our country and supports our district, I'm going to support that policy." He also highlighted affordability as a key issue for voters, emphasizing the need for government accountability in spending and policies to lower inflation and living costs.
Elijah will face Navy veteran and former NASA employee Bale Dalton in the general election on November 3.
