Ronald Dowling, 66, was involved in a fatal car crash that resulted in the death of Sharon Berry, 54, while driving his Maserati at 76 mph in heavy rain on the A4042 in Pontypool, Gwent, in October 2023. Dowling lost control of his vehicle, which aquaplaned before colliding with Berry's parked Audi. Berry succumbed to her injuries three months after the incident. Dowling's two passengers were also injured, with one requiring an induced coma due to serious injuries.
In court, Dowling admitted to causing Berry's death and was sentenced to a 27-month prison term, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work. He was also banned from driving for four years and required to pay £1,630 in costs. Judge Celia Hughes remarked on the senselessness of Berry's death and the impact on her family.
Dowling, who became a full-time carer for his wife following the crash, was driving his friend to a hospital appointment at the time. His defense attorney stated that Dowling's remorse is genuine, though he has not experienced the same suffering as the victims' families. The judge emphasized the devastating consequences of Dowling's actions, noting his speeding in poor weather conditions.
Berry's family expressed their grief, highlighting the emotional toll of her loss. Her son, Luke, and sister, Lorraine Ashton, shared their ongoing pain and the void left by her absence.
