Federal Investigation into Ilhan Omar's Citizenship Status

A federal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is reportedly aimed at revoking her citizenship and potentially leading to her deportation, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on October 14, 2026. The investigation involves Homeland Security agents searching Omar's home in Washington, D.C., as part of a probe into whether she or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false or misleading information during the process of obtaining legal status in the U.S. in the 1990s. The report indicates that the inquiry focuses on whether Omar or her father altered her age on her citizenship application, claiming she was 17 instead of 18. If she was 17, her citizenship would have been automatically granted alongside her father's; if she was 18, she would have needed to undergo a separate naturalization process. Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000 after arriving in the U.S. from Somalia in 1995. The Department of Justice must file a lawsuit and prove in federal court that a naturalized citizen lied to obtain citizenship in order to revoke it. On October 13, U.S. Attorney Jeanne Pirro announced that her office has initiated several investigations into Omar, who is currently facing reelection next month. Following the search of her residence, Omar accused President Donald Trump of attempting to 'weaponize federal law enforcement' and stated, 'I will not be silenced.'
