David Lloyd Clubs has initiated women-only spa sessions at several of its branches following feedback from female members who expressed discomfort using shared facilities with men. The gym group stated that this decision was made in response to significant feedback regarding the need for a space where women could relax without the presence of men, citing reasons including religious beliefs.
However, this move has led to allegations of discrimination, with male customers complaining about being excluded from the spa areas for two hours each week without a corresponding reduction in membership fees. Some have also noted that there is no equivalent men-only session offered. Concerns have been raised particularly about the timing of the women-only sessions, which occur during peak hours, limiting access for male members.
One complaint highlighted that the ban on male members during prime hours, without an equivalent provision for men, constitutes active discrimination. In contrast, some women have welcomed the initiative, stating it provides a necessary space for those who feel uncomfortable around men in swimwear due to past experiences or cultural reasons.
David Lloyd Clubs has implemented these women-only sessions in 15 of its 151 gyms across the country. The company defended its decision, asserting that it aligns with the principles of the Equality Act 2010 and emphasized its commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all members. A spokesperson stated that the spa remains accessible outside of the designated women-only times and that the club will continue to consider feedback from all members.
