Spencer Pratt Advances to Runoff in Los Angeles Mayoral Race Against Karen Bass

<p>Spencer Pratt, a reality television personality, is positioned to advance in the Los Angeles mayoral race as he seeks to unseat incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the upcoming November runoff. Bass, who has served as mayor since 2022, did not secure a majority in the primary election held on Tuesday, resulting in the top two candidates proceeding to the runoff.</p><p>In the primary, no candidate achieved the required 50% of the vote. Pratt, known for his role on the MTV show "The Hills," was reported to be in second place as of Wednesday morning.</p><p>Bass, who has received endorsements from California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris, has faced criticism regarding her handling of various issues, including wildfires and homelessness. Pratt has publicly criticized Bass, attributing the city's challenges, such as crime and fire recovery, to her leadership. He specifically mentioned the impact of wildfires on his own home.</p><p>Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman, who also ran in the primary, has not yet conceded defeat, despite trailing behind Bass and Pratt. Raman, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, previously posed a challenge to Bass from a more progressive standpoint.</p><p>Pratt, registered as a Republican, faces challenges in the general election, as less than 20% of voters in the predominantly Democratic city identify with the GOP, although the mayoral race is officially nonpartisan.</p><p>Representative Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, noted that Pratt's rise in the race reflects widespread voter dissatisfaction with Bass’s administration. In contrast, Bass maintains that her leadership is steering the city towards improvement, citing reductions in homelessness and efforts to increase housing and police recruitment.</p>
