South Dakota Governor Advances to Runoff in Republican Primary

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has advanced to a runoff in the Republican gubernatorial primary held on Tuesday. The results were confirmed on Wednesday, indicating that he will face businessman Toby Doeden in the next round. Congressman Dusty Johnson was considered a strong competitor but did not qualify for the runoff, nor did House Speaker Jon Hansen. As no candidate received more than 35% of the vote, state law mandates an eight-week period before the final election, scheduled for June 28. Rhoden, who previously served as lieutenant governor under Kristi Noem, has emphasized continuing Noem's policies aimed at making South Dakota more affordable and business-friendly. He expressed his feelings about the extended campaign period by comparing himself to Punxsutawney Phil, stating, "I kind of feel like that proverbial groundhog who came up and saw my shadow, and now there’s going to be eight more weeks of campaigning." Doeden has positioned himself as a political outsider and a conservative alternative to the established candidates. Hansen is regarded as the establishment conservative challenger, having served in the State House for over a decade.
