Target Store in Minnesota Converts Fitting Rooms into Prayer Space

A Target store in Apple Valley, Minnesota, has repurposed a hallway with six changing rooms into a space for Muslim prayer. A customer photographed the area, which was cordoned off with retractable belts and featured a sign that read 'RAMADAN MUBARAK,' a greeting used during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan ended on March 18, 2026, and it is unclear why the sign remained displayed afterward. The sign also indicated that the room was for prayer and requested that individuals not enter. Target has been contacted for clarification regarding the duration of the sign's display and the purpose of the space. According to the federal Civil Rights Act, businesses are required to provide reasonable accommodations for employees' religious practices, though there is no obligation to create dedicated prayer spaces. This Apple Valley location is reportedly not the only Target to have established such areas for Muslim prayer. Additionally, a recent discussion on Reddit indicated that other Target stores in Minnesota have similar accommodations for employees. The topic of prayer spaces has gained attention following plans by a Minneapolis-area school district to include a prayer room and foot-washing station in renovations funded by taxpayer dollars, which has sparked debate regarding the separation of church and state.
