New Jersey prosecutors have charged a police officer with theft related to an incident involving an Associated Press photojournalist's camera bag during a protest at Delaney Hall. Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced the charge against Darryl Brown, a 43-year-old sergeant with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, for allegedly stealing $10,000 worth of camera equipment from journalist Angelina Katsanis on May 30. Katsanis sustained injuries during the incident and was taken to a hospital.
Davenport stated that the alleged misconduct undermines public trust in law enforcement. Brown has been suspended without pay while the investigation continues. If convicted, he could face three to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $15,000. Authorities recovered the stolen items during a search of Brown's home.
The protests at Delaney Hall have seen tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement, prompting Newark Mayor Ras Baraka to announce a reduction in police presence at the site. Baraka emphasized the need for resource management and urged protesters to remain peaceful, despite ongoing unrest.
