NIH Official Discusses MAHA Strategy at American Diabetes Association Conference

Rick Woychik, a senior adviser to NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, delivered the keynote address at the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 scientific sessions in New Orleans on June 5, 2026. He endorsed the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement and discussed the need for an integrated approach to chronic diseases, particularly diabetes. Woychik attributed funding cuts in biomedical research to changes in congressional priorities and the new NIH administration. During a subsequent discussion, ADA’s chief scientific officer, Rita Kalyani, echoed concerns about the erosion of research programs, citing comments from Senator Tammy Baldwin. Woychik also addressed controversial topics such as fluoride in drinking water and the environmental factors influencing autism, emphasizing the importance of understanding biological responses to vaccines. He noted that ongoing research is needed to assess the impact of fluoride on children's mental health and highlighted the need for rigorous experimental design in research.
