Increase in Impersonation of ICE Agents Reported Amid Immigration Crackdown

A Mexican immigrant in Greensboro, North Carolina, reported an armed robbery by assailants posing as ICE agents on January 20, 2025. The incident occurred the same day Donald Trump returned to the White House, promising a significant increase in deportations. Local police have not made any arrests related to the case. An analysis by Noticias Telemundo indicates that impersonation of immigration agents has risen, with at least 31 cases documented in 2025, compared to an average of 5.3 incidents per year in the previous decade. The report also noted that 84% of these impersonations involved individuals claiming to be ICE agents. The level of violence associated with these incidents has increased, with 38% of cases in 2025 involving violent acts, up from an average of 23% in previous years. The FBI has issued warnings about criminals exploiting the heightened visibility of ICE to target vulnerable communities. Despite requests for statistics, neither the Department of Homeland Security nor ICE provided comments on the trends. Impersonating a federal agent is a serious offense, punishable by up to three years in prison.
