Daycare Operator Charged with Negligent Homicide After Child Drowns

<p>Joann Johnson, a 37-year-old woman from Prairieville, Louisiana, has been charged with negligent homicide following the drowning of a 3-year-old boy in a backyard pool. Authorities reported that the child was left unconscious in the water for approximately 20 minutes before being rescued.</p><p>The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) stated that surveillance footage showed the child, identified as Ian Perez, struggling in the pool without supervision. The incident occurred on May 18, with the drowning reported to 911 at around 3:50 p.m.</p><p>After deputies arrived, they attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR, before the boy was flown to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Johnson, who was not a licensed daycare provider, turned herself in to authorities and was released on a $100,000 bond.</p><p>APSO spokesperson Donovan Jackson noted the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that while accidents can happen, the lack of supervision for over 20 minutes constitutes clear negligence. Johnson faces a potential prison sentence of two to 10 years if convicted.</p><p>The family of Ian Perez described him as a friendly and energetic child who was very close to his sister. The incident has raised concerns about home and pool safety, particularly as summer approaches.</p>
