On Sunday evening, six individuals were stabbed at New York City's Penn Station, which is recognized as the busiest train station in the Western Hemisphere. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at the West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue entrance. Amtrak police apprehended the suspect, who is reported to be homeless and emotionally disturbed, after using pepper spray during the confrontation. Multiple victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, with one in serious condition, although none were reported to have life-threatening injuries.
Amtrak Police released a statement confirming their response to the stabbing and that an investigation is ongoing. The incident coincides with the upcoming Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden, located directly above the train station. Due to the high-profile nature of the event, which is expected to be attended by President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, enhanced security measures have been implemented.
In addition, the FIFA World Cup is set to begin this week, co-hosted by New York and New Jersey, with a FIFA World Cup Fan Village located at Rockefeller Center, also near Penn Station. Mayor Mamdani addressed the stabbing on social media, describing the violence as "horrific" and "unacceptable." He expressed his concern for the victims and their families, wishing them a full recovery.
