NEW YORK (AP) — Six individuals sustained injuries in a stabbing incident at New York’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, according to authorities. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the busy transportation hub, which serves Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit, and New York City subway lines. A suspect was taken into custody following the attack.
Paramedics reported that one victim suffered serious injuries, two had moderate injuries, and two sustained minor injuries. All five were transported to Bellevue Hospital, while another individual was taken to a separate hospital with an unknown condition.
Authorities have not released details regarding the motive behind the stabbing or whether the victims were specifically targeted. Following the incident, the scene returned to normal as travelers continued to pass through the station, despite the presence of medical gloves, discarded bandages, and traces of blood near the affected area.
The stabbing occurred just before a significant sports event, with thousands expected to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. This game marks the first NBA Finals appearance at Madison Square Garden since 1999. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to attend the game, which has prompted heightened security measures from the Secret Service, New York Police Department, and other agencies. Authorities have not indicated whether the stabbing incident will impact security arrangements for the game.
Amtrak police are currently investigating the stabbing and have taken a suspect into custody, though no information about the suspect's identity or potential charges has been disclosed.
