A manhunt is currently in progress after a 22-year-old student at Pennsylvania State University was shot and killed on Saturday during an alleged armed robbery attempt. The incident occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, around 1:30 a.m. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, Billy Schmidt was found on the street with a gunshot wound to his chest and was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after 1:47 a.m.
Bill Schmidt, the victim's father, stated that his son was returning home from a bar where he had been watching the NBA Finals with friends. Security footage provided to police reportedly shows Schmidt confronting an individual for his stolen phone before several gunshots were fired. The video captures a man throwing a cellphone and another person running away, pursued by Schmidt, who was subsequently shot.
Billy Schmidt was a senior at Pennsylvania State University and was expected to graduate in December. His father described him as a caring individual who never caused trouble. Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the shooting, and a neighbor has called for anyone with information to assist the investigation. The victim's sister has set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised over $48,000 in the wake of his death.
