South Carolina Democrats have nominated Dr. Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, as their candidate for the upcoming Senate race against incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican seeking a fifth term. Andrews won a three-way primary contest on June 10, 2026. South Carolina has not elected a Democratic senator since the 1990s, with the last being Fritz Hollings, who retired in 2005.
Andrews has expressed her intention to target Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., stating at a recent rally that she aims to "lead the charge to impeach and remove RFK Jr." Although the Senate does not initiate impeachment proceedings, it plays a role in the final steps of the process. In an op-ed published earlier this year, Andrews criticized Kennedy's influence on public health, particularly regarding the anti-vaccine movement, which she claims has contributed to a decline in herd immunity and outbreaks of diseases like measles.
Meanwhile, Graham is facing a competitive primary challenge from businessman Mark Lynch and others, which is seen as a test of former President Donald Trump's endorsement power within the Republican Party.
