Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-CA) will compete against Richard Pan in the upcoming November election for California's 6th Congressional District. The primary results showed Kiley receiving 45,006 votes (24.5%), while Pan garnered 42,587 votes (23.2%), and Republican Michael Stansfield received 36,961 votes (20.1%). With 92% of the votes counted, the Associated Press confirmed Pan's advancement to the runoff.
Kiley, who previously represented the 3rd Congressional District, opted to run as an independent candidate in the newly drawn 6th District, which includes both conservative and liberal areas. He expressed frustration with partisanship in Congress, stating he prioritizes his constituents over party leaders.
Pan, a pediatrician and former state lawmaker, aims to hold Kiley accountable for his support of certain legislation related to healthcare. He has been a prominent figure in California's vaccine mandate discussions and decided to enter the congressional race following recommendations from health officials.
The primary system in California allows the top two candidates to advance to the general election if no candidate secures a majority of the votes.
