California Congressional Candidate Mai Vang Refuses to Recite Pledge of Allegiance

Mai Vang, a candidate for California's 7th Congressional District and current Sacramento City Councilmember, has faced criticism after videos emerged showing her not participating in the Pledge of Allegiance during city council meetings. Clips from Memorial Day weekend depict Vang remaining silent or turning away as the pledge was recited. In a recent video, she was observed with her eyes downcast during the pledge. Vang has previously explained her stance in a Facebook post, stating that she refrains from reciting the pledge to ground herself and to acknowledge ongoing injustices. She emphasized the importance of remaining aware of societal issues rather than becoming complacent. Vang is among several candidates challenging long-time Democratic Representative Doris Matsui, who has held her seat for over 20 years. Vang's progressive platform includes support for universal healthcare and increased taxes on billionaires. Political consultant Steve Maviglio criticized Vang's actions as disrespectful, stating that saying the pledge is a basic expectation of patriotism. The primary election is scheduled for June 2.
