In 2025, there were 4,889 recorded expatriations of US citizens, according to a group tracking IRS reports. Many individuals cite financial burdens, including tax obligations, as well as personal and political reasons for their decision. The US State Department recently reduced the fee for renouncing citizenship from $2,350 to $450. Erin Klatt, who moved to New Zealand in 2016, officially renounced her US citizenship in early 2026. She expressed dissatisfaction with the political climate in the US and the financial implications of maintaining citizenship. The State Department does not publish statistics on renunciations, but the Treasury Department releases quarterly IRS reports. The organization Americans Overseas reported a significant increase in inquiries about renunciation, predicting a 15% rise in expatriations compared to the previous year. Co-founder Daan Durlacher noted that the figures may be underreported. Renouncing US citizenship involves a formal process that includes paperwork and an in-person oath at a US embassy or consulate. Klatt described the process as challenging and highlighted the role of online communities in providing support.
