In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Cassidy initially expressed disapproval of Clayton's nomination. However, he later stated on X that he misheard the question and was actually referring to Bill Pulte, who is set to serve as acting DNI starting June 19. Cassidy stated, 'I misheard her and assumed she meant Pulte, since the conversation was about news that had broken minutes before. This is not my position on Clayton.' During the original interview, Cassidy had criticized Pulte's nomination, calling it a 'very poor choice' and expressing concerns about the use of personal information by government officials. He indicated uncertainty about his support for Clayton's nomination, stating, 'We’ll see if he makes it.' Clayton, currently the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, has been involved in high-profile investigations, including that of Jeffrey Epstein. Trump announced Clayton's nomination via a Truth Social post, urging the Senate to confirm him 'as soon as possible.' Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) mentioned that the Senate would work to expedite Clayton's confirmation process, noting his previous Senate experience. The extent of opposition Clayton may face in the Senate remains unclear, as he must first be processed by the Senate Intelligence Committee.
