Democrats are preparing to investigate President Donald Trump’s family businesses and subpoena acting Attorney General Todd Blanche regarding Jeffrey Epstein if they gain control of the House in the upcoming elections. California Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, indicated that subpoenas could be issued on the first day of their majority. He noted the lack of hearings on Epstein under the current GOP leadership and expressed the need for public hearings.
Garcia's proposed agenda includes investigating alleged corruption involving Trump’s family, potential pay-to-play schemes at the Department of Homeland Security, and issues related to vaccine programs at Health and Human Services. He specifically mentioned the need to scrutinize an investment fund managed by Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and government contracts awarded to companies linked to Trump’s children.
Current House Oversight Chair James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, criticized the Democrats' plans, claiming they are solely focused on attacking Trump. Garcia, who has quickly risen in prominence within the Democratic Party, emphasized the importance of accountability and oversight. He aims to collaborate with other Democrats, including Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, on these investigations if they win the majority.
Garcia also highlighted the Democrats' intent to pursue financial documents related to Epstein from banks and to work with Epstein's estate for further information. He mentioned the possibility of contempt proceedings against Trump officials who do not comply with subpoenas, indicating that confrontations with administration officials could occur early in their term.
