Jeff Metcalf expressed his belief that the school district mishandled the situation regarding Anthony's graduation, stating that Waldrip succumbed to pressure from Anthony's supporters to allow him to graduate despite the circumstances surrounding the murder. In an interview, Metcalf described Waldrip as 'spineless' and criticized the decision to permit Anthony to graduate, arguing that the school handbook mandates expulsion for murder. He also highlighted concerns about security at the track meet, claiming that the school did not have adequate measures in place. Waldrip announced his retirement from the school district in November 2025, several months after the incident.
