President Donald Trump characterized his private meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron at the Group of Seven summit in Evian, France, as a "very good meeting". He indicated that he would meet with Zelensky again later that day.
While a working session with G7 leaders was planned, a private conversation between Trump and Zelensky was not scheduled prior to Trump's arrival. Trump also called for an end to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, stating that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He remarked on the significant loss of life in the conflict, saying, "They lose so many soldiers. This is — not since World War II is anything like this."
Zelensky confirmed the meeting by sharing photos on social media, emphasizing the importance of coordinating positions. The G7 working session focused on military support for Ukraine and potential peace negotiations. Trump expressed a commitment to focusing on the Russia-Ukraine war following a recent peace agreement with Iran, stating, "Twenty-five thousand people a month are dying, mostly soldiers, and that shouldn’t happen."
