Supporter of DC Mayoral Candidate Calls for Release of Accused Assassin

Makia Green, the political director for Washington's Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George, has called for the release and pardon of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Green made her comments on her Threads account, where she has garnered support for Mangione, including over $1.5 million in donations for his defense. In a post, she stated, '#FreeLuigi and pardon the youth!' following Thompson's assassination. Green's video did not receive any replies. Lewis George's campaign has not commented on the matter. In 2020, Lewis George ran for city council, advocating for policies such as reducing police funding and providing free abortion care. Comparisons have been made between Lewis George and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who faced scrutiny over his supporters' access to press credentials related to Mangione. Mangione is accused of stalking and shooting Thompson and is scheduled to go to trial on September 8, facing state charges that could result in a life sentence if convicted. A separate federal trial is expected to begin early next year. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
