Eduardo Bolsonaro Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Seeking US Interference in Father's Trial

Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison by Brazil's supreme court. The court found him guilty of attempting to solicit US interference in his father's trial related to a coup plot. The charges, brought by Brazil's prosecutor general, indicated that Eduardo Bolsonaro sought sanctions against judges involved in his father's case and tariffs on Brazilian goods from the Trump administration. Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for his role in the coup attempt following the 2022 elections. Eduardo Bolsonaro, who moved to the United States in 2025, stated that his actions were not intended to secure his father's acquittal but to compel the Brazilian supreme court to hold officials accountable for constitutional compliance. In July 2025, a Brazilian judge ordered the freezing of Eduardo Bolsonaro's bank accounts over allegations that he was receiving funds from his father to support his lobbying efforts in the US. Jair Bolsonaro has been under house arrest due to health issues since March 2026.
