Rex Heuermann Sentenced to Life in Prison for Gilgo Beach Murders

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — Rex Heuermann has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to being the Gilgo Beach serial killer. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney stated that Heuermann had a kill room in his basement, which was described as reminiscent of the TV show 'Dexter.' Heuermann received three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, followed by four additional terms of 25 years to life. During the sentencing, Judge Timothy Mazzei criticized Heuermann, calling him a 'disgusting and despicable small man.' Heuermann's known murders span from 1993 to 2010, involving multiple victims, including Sandra Costilla and the Gilgo Four. Prosecutors indicated that Heuermann had created a planning document labeled 'HK,' which detailed his methods and locations for disposing of victims. Investigators found evidence in his basement, including adhesive stains and plastic sheets, suggesting the location of the crimes. Heuermann's case has drawn significant media attention, and he is expected to cooperate with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit as part of a plea deal.
