South Carolina Senate Rejects Trump-backed Redistricting Map

<p>The South Carolina Senate voted against a redistricting map backed by former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, with a vote tally of 20-24, falling short of the 26 votes needed for advancement. Several Republican senators joined Democrats in opposing the measure, which aimed to eliminate the state's only Democratic district represented by Rep. James Clyburn.</p><p>This defeat follows Trump's public pressure on South Carolina Republicans to adopt a redistricting strategy similar to those in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, aimed at strengthening the GOP's position ahead of the upcoming elections.</p><p>In addition to the South Carolina vote, a federal panel of judges blocked a Republican-backed redistricting map in Alabama, marking another setback for Trump's redistricting efforts. GOP leadership in South Carolina had previously expressed concerns about moving forward with the map while primary elections were already in progress.</p><p>GOP Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey stated earlier this month that he would not yield to Trump on this issue, emphasizing the importance of a viable Democratic Party for Republican strength. Following the vote, Republican state Senator Richard Cash noted that it was impractical to alter the election process while citizens were already voting.</p><p>Trump had urged South Carolina lawmakers to proceed with the redistricting effort, expressing his intent to closely monitor the situation and calling for bold action from state Republicans.</p>
