A former UK police officer, Luke Salmons, has reached a confidential settlement with the North Yorkshire Police following his suspension after questioning aspects of Islam during Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training. Salmons, who participated in training sessions in 2023 and 2024, alleged that he faced discrimination based on his Christian beliefs after he raised questions during a session led by a Muslim sergeant regarding the war in Gaza and the concept of jihad. Following this, he was suspended and told by his inspector that she no longer wanted him on her team due to his beliefs.
Salmons stated that he was advised to apologize during the investigation, which he did, but he later resigned due to the impact on his family. A disciplinary panel initially found his behavior to be gross misconduct, but this decision was overturned upon appeal, with the Chief Constable stating that while there were concerns, they did not amount to gross misconduct. Despite being removed from the barred list, Salmons pursued legal action against the police force for alleged religious discrimination. The North Yorkshire Police acknowledged their commitment to inclusivity but emphasized that expressions of beliefs must be respectful and considerate of others.
