Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism from local Muslim activists who plan to protest outside Gracie Mansion on Tuesday night. The protesters accuse the mayor of promoting an extreme form of Islamism. Mamdani, who is New York City’s first Muslim mayor, is also under scrutiny from anti-Israel activists who believe he has not sufficiently supported Palestinian causes since taking office.
Anila Ali, president of the American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council, stated her intention to join the protest, claiming that Mamdani's policies are alienating moderate Muslims and harming relations between Muslim and Jewish communities. Ali expressed concerns that Mamdani's leadership is being co-opted by Islamist ideologies, which she believes do not represent the views of many American Muslims.
Ali described herself as part of a movement of moderate Muslims who reject extremist ideologies and advocate for coexistence and religious freedom. She criticized Mamdani for his perceived alignment with groups that promote hardline views, suggesting that many moderate Muslims feel sidelined by such organizations.
Criticism of Mamdani extends beyond moderate Muslims. Hardline anti-Israel activists have also expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that he has not taken a strong enough stance in support of Palestinian activism. Nerdeen Kiswani, a Palestinian-American activist, criticized Mamdani for his comments regarding Israel's right to exist and for what she sees as a retreat from earlier support for more radical pro-Palestinian slogans.
The protest is organized by End Jew Hatred in collaboration with various Muslim, Jewish, and Christian groups, including the American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council and the Catholic League. The event aims to unite different faith communities against what they perceive as extremist politics disguised as mainstream Islam.
Mamdani's office has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the planned protest.
