UK police investigate train collision that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries

LONDON (AP) — Nine people were reported in critical condition on Saturday following a collision between two passenger trains in central England on Friday evening, which resulted in the death of the driver of one of the trains, according to police. British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi stated that over 80 individuals received treatment in hospitals after the incident, with 28 remaining hospitalized the following day. Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III expressed his sadness regarding the crash, extending his thoughts and sympathies to the family of the deceased and those affected by the incident. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, which occurred when a commuter train heading to London’s St. Pancras Station collided with the rear of another train also bound for the same destination. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of chaos, with passengers reporting injuries and distress. Peter Knapp, a passenger, recounted being thrown forward by the impact and witnessing fellow travelers with severe injuries. Another passenger, Brett Byatt, noted that only a few individuals in their carriage were uninjured. In recent years, Britain's railways have maintained a strong safety record, with the last fatal collision involving multiple trains occurring in Wales in October 2024.
