Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Administration's Lawsuit Against New Jersey Sanctuary Cities

A federal judge has dismissed the Trump administration's lawsuit against four New Jersey sanctuary cities, ruling that the Justice Department's claims were insufficient. U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin stated that the federal government lacked standing, as the local policies mirrored a statewide immigration directive, meaning a court victory would not resolve the issues raised by the Department of Justice. The lawsuit targeted Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City, and Paterson, alleging that their policies obstructed federal immigration enforcement. Judge Padin noted that the statewide Immigrant Trust Directive limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities, which is similar to the cities' policies. The judge did not rule on the constitutionality of the sanctuary policies but emphasized that even if the cities' policies were struck down, many restrictions would remain due to the statewide directive. The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in May 2025, claiming the cities' policies violated the Constitution's Supremacy Clause. The ruling allows for the possibility of the administration to refile the case if it can address the standing issue.
