An eighth individual has been charged in connection with a thwarted plot targeting the Freedom 250 Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House. Mike Rogers, a former House Intelligence Committee Chair and current Senate candidate from Michigan, stated that escalating rhetoric from some Democrats is contributing to a climate that may incite violence. He expressed concern that such rhetoric is encouraging individuals to move beyond normal political discourse.
Rogers noted that all eight suspects are accused of conspiring to use explosive-laden drones to cause a mass evacuation at the June 14 event, directing fleeing crowds toward pre-positioned shooters, with a secondary plan aimed at the White House gate. He emphasized that the language used by some political figures could lead to radical behavior, including violent acts.
The suspects allegedly coordinated their plans through various online platforms, including Telegram and TikTok, and were found to have acquired drones, firearms, and tactical gear in preparation for the attack. The plot was ultimately foiled thanks to a tip from the mother of one of the suspects. Rogers also highlighted a recent attack on a Michigan synagogue, linking it to the normalization of political violence through incendiary rhetoric. He expressed concern over the role of social media in amplifying violent language and behavior.
