Democratic Senator Chris Coons was hospitalized on June 25, 2026, following a multi-car crash in Sussex County, Delaware. The 62-year-old senator, who has represented Delaware in the Senate since 2010, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Beebe Hospital, where he was treated and subsequently discharged.
Coons was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash, which occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Savannah Road. According to a statement from Coons, the incident was caused by a driver experiencing a medical emergency. In total, six individuals were hospitalized with minor injuries as a result of the crash.
Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell confirmed that a pickup truck driver lost consciousness, leading to the collision. He noted that there were no indications of impairment from the truck driver. Coons expressed gratitude to the emergency services and hospital staff, stating he felt relieved that no serious injuries occurred during the incident.
Delaware Representative Sarah McBride extended her well wishes to Coons on social media, expressing her relief that he was okay. Coons has been a close ally of former President Joe Biden and served as national co-chair of Biden’s re-election campaign in 2024.
