Senator Gallego's Spokesperson Claims Trump is Targeting Him with DOJ Investigation

A spokesperson for Senator Ruben Gallego stated on Monday that President Donald Trump is targeting the Arizona Democrat through a Justice Department investigation into his campaign finances. This statement followed a report from Axios regarding the inquiry. The spokesperson accused the Justice Department of being weaponized and claimed that the administration is attempting to silence critics. They stated, "Trump is targeting Senator Gallego while the most weaponized Department of Justice in history is turning a blind eye to Trump’s unprecedented corruption..." The spokesperson noted that Gallego's office did not have independent knowledge of the investigation beyond the Axios report, which indicated that the inquiry originated from a whistleblower complaint in Southern California. The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment. Additionally, Gallego's office released a letter from the Senate Ethics Committee stating that it had closed a complaint against him filed by Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna. The letter indicated that the Committee found no evidence of violations of federal law or Senate rules.
