Democratic socialists are focusing their efforts on Colorado following recent victories in New York City. Rep. Diana DeGette is facing a challenge from Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old attorney and democratic socialist, in what is considered her toughest reelection fight. Kiros, who was dismissed from her law firm in 2023 after criticizing the firm's response to pro-Palestinian protests, aims to leverage the momentum from New York to address voter dissatisfaction with the political system.
Kiros has received endorsements from figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and various progressive organizations. However, the race is not strictly ideological, as DeGette is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has taken progressive stances, including criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza and opposing additional U.S. military aid to Israel.
DeGette emphasized her experience in Congress as beneficial to her constituents, stating her commitment to progressive values. Meanwhile, Kiros is seen as a candidate who represents a challenge to both Republican and Democratic establishments.
In addition to the congressional race, other Democratic primaries in Colorado include contests for governor and Senate, with notable candidates like state senator Julie Gonzales and Attorney General Phil Weiser competing against incumbents.
