Trump Administration Threatens Funding for Kansas School District Over Transgender Policy

The Education Department stated that this policy violates the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The agency is collaborating with the Justice Department to implement enforcement measures, which may include judicial proceedings and the potential loss of federal funding. Frank Miller, Director of the Student Privacy Policy Office at the Education Department, expressed that the district's actions represent a significant violation of federal law. The district's policy states that school personnel should not disclose a student's transgender status to others, including parents. The Education Department indicated that the district has not complied with proposed resolutions to address these violations. Additionally, the administration has threatened to withdraw federal funding from several other districts nationwide over similar transgender policies. Earlier in the year, the Education Department identified violations of federal law concerning transgender students in four Kansas school districts, including Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.
