The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Philadelphia from Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., coinciding with the Round of 16 match between Paraguay and France scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. Kansas City, Missouri, will also host a match between Ghana and Colombia at 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, while under its own extreme heat warning.
FIFA has implemented measures to address the heat, including air-conditioning units for player benches, additional hydration breaks during matches, and allowing fans to bring sealed water bottles into stadiums. For the 2026 World Cup, FIFA had already mandated a three-minute hydration break per half, and the additional breaks will increase the total hydration pause time to 12 minutes. The knockout stage matches will be held from Saturday through Tuesday.
The heat wave coincides with the United States's 250th anniversary celebrations, with many outdoor events planned, including parades and fireworks. In Washington, a parade and fireworks shows are scheduled, along with a military flyover and a speech by President Donald Trump.
