The survey shows that pride has decreased significantly since the early 2000s, when 55% of adults were extremely proud. The percentage of those expressing extreme pride has not exceeded 47% since 2018.
The poll highlights a notable partisan divide, with 70% of Republicans, 28% of independents, and 14% of Democrats stating they are extremely proud to be American. This gap of 56 percentage points between Republicans and Democrats is among the largest recorded. The decline in pride is particularly pronounced among women, younger adults, and people of color, with extreme pride among women dropping to 26% and among adults aged 18 to 34 falling to 14%.
Additionally, the survey found that 43% of U.S. adults display the American flag outside their homes, a figure that has remained consistent over the past 40 years but is lower than the 59% reported in 1991. Republicans are more likely to display the flag (69%) compared to independents (42%) and Democrats (26%). The results suggest a correlation between national pride and the likelihood of displaying the flag, with those expressing higher pride more likely to do so.
