Anthropic's Fable 5 Model Returns Following Export Control Lifting

Anthropic's Fable 5 model became available to users again on Wednesday after the Trump administration lifted export controls on the model late Tuesday. The model is noted for being the most powerful publicly available AI tool, prompting the U.S. government to require additional safety measures for its broad availability. Anthropic stated that while Fable is accessible to all customers, queries that may pose security or safety risks could be directed to less powerful models. Customers wishing to use Fable will generally need to do so outside of any subscription plan, paying for the tokens they utilize. Until July 7, subscribers can use Fable for up to half of their included data usage, although it is noted that Fable consumes tokens at a faster rate than other models. The previous blockage of Fable by the U.S. government has raised questions regarding future interventions by the Trump administration concerning the release of advanced AI models. OpenAI has indicated it is delaying the broad release of its latest model, GPT 5.6, while consulting with the government, which requested the postponement.
