International Fleet of Tall Ships Arrives in New Jersey for America's Semiquincentennial Celebrations

An international fleet of tall ships arrived on the shores of New Jersey on July 3, 2026, to mark the celebration of America's Semiquincentennial. Organizers and officials gathered in Sandy Hook to outline the Sail4th 250 tribute. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill noted that nearly 250 years ago, George Washington's army drove the British from New Jersey at Sandy Hook, marking a significant event in the Revolutionary War. The area is home to the oldest continuously lit lighthouse in the United States, which has been operational since 1764, and is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, a national park that spans New York and New Jersey and attracts over 9 million visitors annually. Approximately 20 nations have sent their tall ships to participate in the celebration, including vessels from Italy, India, Peru, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle, the only active square-rigged sailing vessel in federal service, will lead the parade of ships. Governor Sherrill emphasized that the presence of international crews signifies the strength of global security alliances. Planning for the maritime review began in April 2020, and the main festivities are set to begin on Saturday morning, featuring a Tall Ships Parade, International Naval Review, and an International Aerial Review.
