Cannonball Discovered at the Alamo, Possibly from 1836 Battle

Archaeologists uncovered a cannonball on June 2, 2026, which may have been fired during the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. The Alamo Trust announced the discovery on June 16. The cannonball was found outside the northeast corner of the Alamo Church, in an excavation area where another cannonball was discovered in March. The newly found cannonball is covered in heavy rust and appears orange-brown in color. Archaeologists believe it likely remained undisturbed for nearly 190 years due to its depth. Tiffany Lindley, director of archaeology at the Alamo, stated that the cannonball has not been touched since it was dropped, possibly in 1836. The Battle of the Alamo was a significant conflict between Mexican forces and Texian rebels, lasting from February 23 to March 6, 1836. Researchers expressed surprise at finding a second cannonball, given the extensive use of the site over the years, including military and commercial activities. Lindley noted that while the second cannonball is not as well-preserved as the first, it is still in good condition and both artifacts are expected to be sent for conservation. The excavation continues to yield numerous historic finds, providing insights into the daily lives of the site's inhabitants.
