Egypt Unveils New Military Headquarters, the 'Octagon', Near Cairo

Egypt has officially unveiled its new military and state headquarters, named the 'Octagon', which is reported to be over 35 square miles in size, making it the largest defense headquarters in the world. The complex, located in the New Capital east of Cairo, is approximately 39 times larger than the Pentagon. The unveiling was marked by a video showcasing military displays and President Abdel Fatah al Sisi in military uniform. In his inaugural speech, Sisi emphasized the importance of the complex for national security and stability, stating it would serve as a key base for addressing challenges. The Octagon comprises ten buildings and 13 zones, designed for various military and administrative functions, and includes facilities such as places of worship, sports clubs, and hospitals. The construction of the Octagon began in 2016 and has faced criticism regarding its cost, estimated between $60 billion and $80 billion, amid ongoing economic challenges in Egypt. Sisi's administration has been characterized by attempts at economic reform, which have met with public resistance. He acknowledged the hardships faced by citizens in his speech at the Octagon, reiterating the government's commitment to improving living standards.
