Maine Democrats Consider Candidates to Replace Graham Platner Amid Allegations

Maine Democrats are positioning themselves for the potential vacancy left by Graham Platner, whose U.S. Senate campaign is under scrutiny following a sexual assault allegation reported by Politico. Platner has until July 13 to decide whether to remain in the race after a former partner accused him of assaulting her in 2021. He has denied the allegation but indicated he is evaluating his campaign. Leading Democrats, including former state Senate President Troy Jackson, former public health chief Nirav Shah, and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, are being considered as potential replacements. The Maine Democratic Party and national party groups distanced themselves from Platner on Monday. A poll conducted by Tavern Research indicated varying levels of favorability among potential candidates, with Hannah Pingree leading at 64% approval among Democrats, although she is committed to the governor's race. Jackson, Shah, and Bellows have also received significant support. Some party members express concern that Platner's continued candidacy could hinder Democratic chances against incumbent Senator Susan Collins.
