ANKARA, Turkey — NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies during an interview with POLITICO at the NATO leaders’ summit in Turkey. Rutte stated that Trump was correct in urging NATO allies to increase defense spending and modernize their militaries. He noted that Trump’s approach has led to significant commitments from NATO members, with 31 non-U.S. NATO countries pledging $250 billion in new defense programs and investments over the past two years.
Rutte emphasized the need for a sustainable NATO that does not overly rely on the U.S. and highlighted the importance of European nations enhancing their military capabilities. He attributed the push for increased defense spending not only to Trump’s demands but also to the perceived threats from Russia, particularly in light of the situation in Ukraine. Rutte remarked that allies are committed to supporting Ukraine and building their defenses against potential Russian aggression.
Additionally, Rutte addressed Trump’s comments regarding European support in the military campaign against Iran, stating that European countries played a crucial role in the operations. He affirmed that despite differences, NATO remains united with the U.S. as a partner in defense efforts.
