Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested the United States to increase military support to Ukraine, specifically seeking more Patriot missile systems to aid in the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a letter addressed to former President Donald Trump, Zelensky emphasized the need for these systems to counter the Russian ballistic missile threat, stating that they can be intercepted with U.S. assistance.
Zelensky's appeal follows a history of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars over the past four years. However, recent months have seen a slowdown in the approval of new shipments of Patriot systems. In his letter, Zelensky offered to purchase the missiles and provide advanced drone technology to the U.S. in exchange for military support.
Trump has previously expressed skepticism about Ukraine's ability to win the war against Russia, suggesting that Zelensky should have considered the implications of engaging in conflict with a much larger adversary. Despite this, the Pentagon has not ruled out future deliveries of Patriot systems.
Zelensky also noted a decline in European support for Ukraine, with only nine countries currently funding a Czech-led initiative to supply ammunition, down from 18 last year. He reiterated that Ukraine does not seek an endless war but believes that acquiring Patriot systems is essential to ending the conflict.
The relationship between Washington and Kyiv has faced challenges, particularly regarding Zelensky's refusal to comply with Russian demands to withdraw from the Donbas region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly denied claims that the U.S. is pressuring Ukraine to accept such terms, stating that Zelensky's assertions are false. Meanwhile, fighting between Russia and Ukraine has intensified, with warnings of major strikes against Kyiv.
