Maine state Representative Valli Geiger stated on Wednesday that Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner encouraged her to consider running for his Senate seat if he were to suspend his campaign. Geiger reported that Platner called her on Monday evening, expressing his support and stating, "Valli, you are a fighter, you have been with this movement since the beginning." He asked if he could recommend her name as a candidate, to which she agreed. Geiger also mentioned that Platner supports other potential candidates, including former state Senator Troy Jackson and Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, indicating she would step back for them if necessary.
Following Geiger's comments, Platner's campaign clarified that he had not made a public endorsement. The situation arises amid allegations against Platner, including accusations of inappropriate behavior, which have raised questions about his viability as a candidate. Platner's campaign stated that he had called Geiger to thank her for her support and encouraged her to consider running if he stepped down.
Geiger has represented House District 4 since 2020 and has been a strong supporter of Platner's progressive policies, including "Medicare for All." She emphasized her commitment to protecting his platform. Jackson, who recently lost the Democratic primary for Maine governor, has also expressed interest in replacing Platner if he withdraws. Polling conducted by Platner's campaign indicated that Jackson is viewed as a strong candidate for flipping the Senate seat.
Platner, who has faced scrutiny due to past social media posts and allegations, is currently engaged in a competitive race against incumbent Senator Susan Collins. The Maine Democratic Party has urged Platner to step aside following serious allegations, including a recent claim of rape. Platner has denied all allegations and announced a temporary break from his campaign. The Maine Democratic Party has stated its focus on creating a transparent process for selecting a new nominee when Platner chooses to withdraw.
